Help with my fear of diving off the starting block in the pool?

by FearLessDoMore on December 31, 2011

I have a DEADLY fear of going off the dive block. I have conquered the first part of my fear: jumping off. How do I conquer my fear of diving off? I only have 10 minutes to figure this out!!!

1. Do you know ’streamline position’?
2. Sit on the edge of the pool, arms squeezing your head behind your ears in streamline position.
3. Lean over and put your hands in the water FIRST
4. Keep leaning over … STAY IN STREAMLINE, and follow your hands into the water. Wherever your hands enter the water, do what you can to make your body enter the water at the same place. This is called punching a hole in the water and your entire body, shoulders- chest- hips - knees - and pointed toes enters the water through the same hole.
5. When you feel comfortable doing that, SQUAT at the edge of the pool and do the same thing and add a push with your legs … STAY IN STREAMLINE - THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
5. When you feel comfortable doing that, SQUAT at the edge of the pool and do the same thing. When you feel comfortable doing that, do the same thing and add a push with your legs … STAY IN STREAMLINE - THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
6. When you feel comfortable doing that, STAND at the edge of the pool, bend over and do the same thing. When you feel comfortable doing that, do the same thing and add a push with your legs … STAY IN STREAMLINE - THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

have your coach spot you when you do it. tell them you are afraid and need help. A few dives with a spotter and you will be good to go!

my brother had the same problem. now that youve been able to jump off try to jump out as far as you can. then try to just fall in the water with your hands in steam line possition. if you can concour those two things try putting them together. ask your teamates and coach to help. at the end of the seson and after hours of practice my brother actually had a good start. just keep trying.
