How can I get over my fear of flying?

by FearLessDoMore on January 18, 2012

I have taken many airplane rides, and was never overly worried. Well, 3 years ago, on my way back from hawaii (we were over the ocean), the plane nearly went down. it was tramatizing, and now that flight has brought on panic attacks every time that I fly. It basically ruins my vacations. How can I conquer this fear?

do something to put your mind off flying try not to even think about it, it will take a while to get over that fear.

Your best bet about getting over your fear of flying is to fly again; or this does not work then there is nothing wrong living with that fear. It’s not like you need to fly in order to explore the world, there are also ships, buses and trains. If you need the urge to fight this fear, then the next time you decide to fly, take some "emergency equipment" with you. Not only will you fall safely from the falling plane, but you will also live and probably not worry so much about falling since you now know how to land safely.

The only way is to go flying and face your fear head on. Give yourself a challenge.

anything a therapist will do for you will end up being very expensive and really won’t work until you’ve flown many times, and it will work best if you schedule flights in regular intervals which just isn’t reasonable / affordable to do.

best bet is drugs - get your hands on some benzos, but don’t take more than one alcoholic drink on the flight with them.

pretend someone you love is holding up the plane for you
its freaky, weird, random, paranoid, but works

yea, its called valium…..Seriously, talk to your doctor before you have a flight and tell him/her what is going on and they can help you with that and help calm your nerves. I hope this has helped, best wishes.

Try a procedure called systematic desensitization. In a nut shell you start off thinking about flying, then imagining yourself flying, then watching videos about flying, then you go onto to other steps all the way up to actually flying.

This procedure should be done with the help of a trained counselor

When you are going think about all the good things you are going to do on your holiday think why you are on the plane to enjoy yourself, ask your parents if you can go on holiday to somewhere quite close where it is only a few hours on an airplane and try to find things to do to take your mind of things e.g Games , books , magazines or watch an airplane movie or even sleep it will go straight away.
