How do I conquer my fear of insects?

by FearLessDoMore on January 25, 2010

It might not be a total fear, but whenever I see insects I get this crawling feeling under my skin. I especially hate it when they touch me. It really sucks because after studying insects in biology and whatnot, I think they’re really interesting.

I was thinking I should go to a pet store and play with some tarantulas or something, what do you think?
It’s not that I’m really afraid of them, there’s something internal that revolts against an insect touching me in any way. It’s very hard to describe.

Hi there Adam,

I am not afraid of them but I am wary of spiders because I don’t know which are venomous and not. I guess it lies in the fact that I am an animal lover. I have taken care of almost anything from dogs to cats to cows to wild birds to turtles to monitor lizards to snakes to hermit crabs to sea fishes to…, anything, even earthworms. Insects are very interesting, too. I love watching them naturally. I once had my own very big garden. Forgive me, I have green hand and I discovered that when I just hand-dropped melon seeds in a hole and 3 moths later I harvested 11 very big melons from them. Some of the observing I did are from the pests. I guess I really needed that to know how to fight my enemies. Leaf-cutter ants are interesting. I found once a spider crawling in their territory and they tore it into pieces. I have taken care of a few butterflies. They’re wonderful but the time makes it very boring. I collected grasshoppers, big ones up to 8 inches long or are those locusts. I collected true locusts, not as pets but as food for my frog-eating warbler. You know those big black ants. I have been in many times searching for colonies coz I always wondered what they ate. I never saw them bring food. My brother took care of the common garden spiders. I never did since they collect them for "fights" but I do collected house spiders for them as food. It’s amazing how they (garden spiders) eat them (house spiders). As for the last line, play with something less dangerous. You wouldn’t want to know you’re more than just allergic to bite.

I guess you need just to observe more and see more of them so you would know how to be not afraid of them.

Clear skies!

Think of it this way:
if u show your fear of insects, those around u might think u a coward
And if u are brave enough, crush the insects with your feet (or your hands if u dare)
when the insects get on your skin just flick it off it will become a habit

Hey,

There are techniques based on desensitization (classical conditioning)

you may find this material helpful

But the best way is to consult a therapist
