It depends on the kind of fear and the level of anxiety it causes you. Many fears can be overcome simply by confronting them. If you have a fear of heights, go rappelling. Take a couple of close friends, seeing others do something your afraid of can be helpful. While this might not make you love heights, giving yourself confidence can help lessen the anxiety you feel. Also try to take baby steps. If your fear is public speaking, don’t try to give a 15 minute speech to 80 strangers. Start with a few friends (good friends can be great) or family members.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that it is very difficult to rid yourself of a fear. You need to accpet there are things you just aren’t comforatable with. That is natural, it’s part of your survival instinct. Instead, focus on reducing the level of anxiety.

Persoanally, I don’t like heights. When I was in the Marine Corps, I had the opportunity to work on a rappell tower. I could easily have made reasonable excuses to not do it. Instead, I planned my schedule so that I was able to do it. Every week, twice a week, for three years, I would work on the tower. While every week I got to the top and had to pause and collect myself for a moment, I was able to eventually reduce the amount of stress it caused me. Instead of hating heights, I just don’t care for them now, but they don’t control my life in the least.

Change my attitude/thinking. Dissociate myself from it, and take some deep breathes.

i am not sure if it can be totally conquered. i had been a white collar worker for over 20 years and was totally bummed out and wanted to try something else. i have a fear of heights so i figured i could kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) well, i became a roofer and did this for over 5 years and i really liked the work but i never did conquer my fear of heights. also, i was really amazed that i enjoyed this type of work. can’t figure it all out.
