Ultimately, by experiencing what it’s like to come close to it.

In the Hagakure, a collection of codes and ethics of the Samurai, one enters battle expecting to die. It’s says: "Go into battle expecting to die, and surely you may live; go into battle wanting to live, surely you will die."

A Samurai’s duty was to his Shogun. To die for him and his purpose was an honor. What ever you see as your duty and an honor is what you’re willing to die for and there wouldn’t be moment wasted in fear of dying. I guess it’s called picking your battles wisely.

There’s a song by a man named Sagisu Shiro titled Invasion with a short little poem of sorts, it goes:
For every man, there is a cause which he would gladly die for
Defend the right to have a place to which he can belong to
And every man will fight with his bare hands in desperation
And shed his blood, to spread the flood, to barricade invasion

Simply. You realize the fact that you WILL die someday no matter what you do.

Most people don’t completely eradicate the fear of death. I certainly haven’t and I am terminally ill. I think I would prefer it if it is just one long sleep. When I was a child my aunt you to say "You die if you worry, you die if you don’t, so why worry at all?" It makes complete sense and I have always tried to live in the day I am in and not look too far ahead. It looms large for all of us as we get older and I shall probably know the answer to the eternal question before the year is out, or not, as the case may be.

Everyone fears death. It wouldn’t be normal to not fear death.

By dying.

OOOoooohh!!!

The fear of death!!!

Why on earth are you thinking of death???

Why no focus on LIFE???

Dr Sheldon Cooper 07.27.10 at 12:09 am

you don’t, you use it as a focus to give you strength

there are some people who have decided they’re not scared of dying, but then they have no incentive to survive

I agree with 8 step man, only dead men have no fear.
When I hear some "tough guy" say he has no fear I know he is either lying or he lives in a box and has never faced a potentially life threatening situation.
Fear is a natural human emotion, and EVERYONE has it, I dont care what they say. You just have to accept the fact that you will feel fear to some degree, acknowledging it will help you to keep it under control and do what needs to be done.
I am a Christian man, I know where I will go when I die, my future is secure, but there is still that degree of fear concerning the actual moment of death. Because The human soul is created for eternity the death of the body will always seem unnatural to us, I believe it is meant to be this way to help us keep a more eternal perspective.

Know that Life overcomes Death.
When you’re fighting for your life (hopefully you’ll never come to that, but…) remember that if you know what’s gonna happen to you, you should have no fear. It’s a life and death situation. There are two ways: heaven and hell.

I see, so you are asking two different questions here, one is the fear of death in general right? and the other is the fear of death in combat?

The answer to this question is no answer, it varies from everyone’s own perspective, only you can find an answer to this question that would pertain to you.

For me, I used to be a little curious about death, only because I did not understand it as a child. When I grew up a bit more, things happen (I do not wish to say it here). As for just fear of death in general, no I do not fear it. Because I won’t be alone, I have friends and family in the after life, the only thing I worry about is the pain it may cause for the ones I love left behind me. Do not fear what you do not know, what is strange about the human mind is that it is powerful. People will create things in their minds that can seem so scary and so real, but they have never experienced it, they do not know, yet in their minds it exists. Everyone will go through it, think of it more of a reunion with people you have not met in a long time. But does not mean no will to survival, live your life, amazing things happen when you live, you will have new stories to tell when you live. when you die, how will new experience come? so live.

As for a fear of death during combat, most people will probably be in such an adrenaline rush that they do not even realize it until they are dying. Usually, if you are in a fight for your life, you’re protecting something precious, like a close friend or family. You’re not thinking straight, you’re thinking more simple thoughts like ‘protect’. But when people do feel this fear it isn’t death, its how they may die and whether if it would be painful. They worry of what is to become of them or the ones they love. I say this out of my own experience, this may or may not pertain to you.

So what I am basically trying to say is, you do not conquer what you do not know. You only continue to learn from experience what you do know. What I do know for me is that fear isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it may have negative charge to the word in society. but fear is what keeps the human race going, fear is what keeps some people alive. The only thing is, you shouldn’t fear fear itself, you shouldn’t let it hold you back. it exists, you can’t control it, just make peace with it. and that is the same thing with death.

Usually people overcome their fears by facing them. Example, someone afraid of heights gets on a plain. So you will have to die….

Usually during a life or death situation, your fight or flight reflex will kick in and you will have so much adrenalin in your system that you won’t be able to think about much of anything let alone dying. Overcoming a fear of death and an adrenalin rush during a combat situation takes a lot of training. For example, if a soldier or a martial artist is faced with a life or death situation they’re not able to think much about what they’re doing and their training kicks in. Other people will usually panic and run.
