How to conquer my fear? please help, don’t like to be this way?

by FearLessDoMore on December 5, 2009

I’m afraid of the dark when I’m alone and conscious of my empty surroundings. And also, looking into a mirror because I’m afraid I’ll see things that shouldn’t be there. Also, when the day comes that I have to drive alone, to look behind in the rearview mirror and see something. I am so terrified for my future if I go on like this! I do not watch scary movies because I know they will scare me, but I am still afraid. My friend used to be afraid too, but she started watching a ton of scary movies and seems to have overcome her fear? Do I need to do the same thing? But I feel like I will only be more terrified if I do. Someone please me help me gain some peace of mind. :( How do I train myself not to be afraid? Thanks for any advice you might have.
What can I say to myself when I find myself in such a situation? Um, my current ineffective method is to tell myself: if I die in the next few seconds, there’s nothing I can do about it, why be afraid. And I just feel this flooding fatalistic sense of doom wash over me. So it doesn’t work that well :(

Thanks for everyone’s kindness so far

You need to talk to a psychologist, because it sounds like you have some type of paranoia, and they will teach you things you can do to overcome your fears. If you can’t afford a regular psychologist, maybe you can find a cheaper one, or one who charges on a sliding scale according to your income, at some type of family services in your town, but it would help you tremendously to talk to someone professionally (and I don’t mean that in an insulting way). It would help you clear your head and calm your fears.

the only way to make fears go away is to face them. there was a show once on discovery channel about facing your fears. what i learned and to try and help you was that in order to face your fears, get over them before they run your life, not to mention ruin certain things for you because of your fear - i suggest slowly understanding information on scary movies, see how they make the movie, just slowly exercise your views on the things that fear you. like for example, with the mirror thing-just go to a mirror, for maybe 5minutes a day, look in the background, what you see and focus on the better things that are ACTUALLY there, not what could be. this should hopfully really help you out. good luck, you can over come it!! ~Adia. i’m here for future advice if need me.

same thing like me. are you christian? if you are, God will never let anything hurt you. he’s always there. he’ll always be there for you. he’s watching u and protecting you from hurt. pray. and remember, he has a reason for everything. there is a reason for all the ppl who suffered and are suffering. for example, i have to wake up early in the morning but i can’t seem to fall asleep. i decide to go to the morning service at church w/my mom and it’s great. i pray, i feel better, and i meet new ppl. now i can sleep kinda better. i go to morning services sometimes too. see, there’s a reason for everything. pray and ask and he will give. gl and be safe

Fear is in all of us. Do not let it control your life as it is doing now. If anything you want to fear, fear the thought of not living a fruitful life!

i used to be afraid of the dark. what i did to prevent myself from thinking about creepy and scary stuff was to fill my head with thoughts on things like, what i’ll be doing tommorrow or my boyfriend or stupid stuff me and my friends do sometimes. and after you think about those stuff you’ll tend to forget the "ghosts" lurking in your room. as for the driving thing, well i don’t drive yet but maybe turning up the volume of your fave music will help a whole lot. =)

Her method is by flooding, in which you become used to such things, after prolonged exposure, which is a valid treatment. Seek therapy. Because you seem highly suggestible, hypnotherapy may well prove a quick and effective solution.

I was afraid of vampires for a long time, even though i know they arent real. Im not afraid of the dark but whats in the dark… when you get in your car, just take a peek around lock the door. no one can hurt you inside the car. turn the stereo up a bit not too too loud but enough so even if ur singing you still sound like whomever is on the radio :). Its comforting and relaxing.

The Dark is only scary because of our mind’s ability to manifest the imaginable into images. i jumped when i was getting into my car and saw a reflection in the woods. it was just a skunk. Ill check my backseat and under my car if i feel so afraid. then i would get in my car lock the door immediately haha. but im better after that. no one can catch you while your driving and no one will harm you with the doors locked :)

Good Luck!

Secret girl: Tell that to the many people who have been brutally raped and murdered from the dark. You people are crazy, God will not help. Even if he could, it would kind of alter the balance and totally screw things up.

what the others said summed it up lots. theres various ideas for people with fears;
a) face it
b) hypnosis
c) councilling
d) meds
whatever you choose, the best of luck *snugs* it might take a while, but if you perservere and try your best, you’ll make it!

The trick is to anticipate the feeling coming on and stop yourself from having the feeling. You already realize that the feeling is irrational. So now you have to train yourself to feel something different when the situations that trigger those feelings occur. It’s not easy but you CAN do it. Good Luck.

if it can’t be help’d that you will die… then why worry about it?
those worries will only consume your life.
it’s fine to be pre-cautious
but line of cowardice is drawn when you’re not doing what is right when you know it is right.
when you come to understand your inner strength, you’ll have that much less to be afraid of.
and if you have important goals or people you can set above your own life, then showing courage will be simple.
and living starts when you throw all your spirit into your actions.
don’t make excuses for falling behind. make reasons for charging ahead.
always have an additude to win, even in a losing situation.
also, you won’t have to die if you understand the workings of the universe.

Pray and ask god to protect you. Say the lords prayer. Also you can learn how to protect yourself and you will feel much better knowing that nothing can touch you. Take up self defense. I am an expert with improvised weaponry, so pretty much anything. If you could do that it wouldn’t matter what is in the dark, you could defeat it. Keep a phone near you too so you know you can always call someone if you need to. You know what else you could try is convincing yourself something that you could take comfort in thinking about when you are afraid. Example: When my sister and I were little we were afraid of what was lurking in the dark after we had a bad dream. When either of us had a bad dream we would come over to eachothers beds and we would sleep together. So that we could fall asleep we convinced ourselves that whoever was on the outside of the bed when it was pushed against the wall was going to get eaten first or taken by the whatever was in the dark. Ofcourse then nobody wanted to be on the outside of the bed but I always ended up that way because I was braver.

Anyhow if you convinced yourself something like that maybe it would help you get over your fear. You could convince yourself that looking in mirrors would actually help you because then you would know if something was there and you could stop it. Then you would always want to look in mirrors everytime you see one. You would nolonger be afraid. Anyhow just an idea, hope it makes sense. Goodluck
