What is the best way to conquer your fear of walking down the street alone?

by FearLessDoMore on March 2, 2010

This is just for fun and curiosity, what would be the best way to conquer the fear of leaving your house without feeling afraid to walk down the street. Usually I am afraid of being kidnapped, harassed, or robbed but maybe thats my imagination. I want to know the best way to conquer my fears. There are times when I just want to walk and leave my house but things in my past have traumatized me into not doing so.

You could choose a song on your iPod and play it when you go out like "eye of the tiger" or something that’s uplifting to you and makes you feel like you could take on the world. I would suggest driving to a busy place or a place where you are pretty much alone. Whichever you feel comfortable in and walk around with that playing. I listen to my iPod through one ear thingy cause I like to be able to hear whats going on around me. Even if you hide in a coat or something do it. Or find a local college campus and walk around it during the day when kids are out and about. It’s safe and practically no one will care who you are. Now if you could tell me how to get over my irrational fear of bugs I’d be much obliged lol! But to the fears thing. I get really bad panic attacks sometimes and I’ve found out that if i fight the fear, and tell myself no one is here to hurt me, breath, look around, who is going to hurt you? in essence force my mind away from my irrational fear and force it to look at the current situation, then i can slowly calm myself down. Although I do feel like crawling in bed right after wards cause it takes so much out of me.

bring an ipod, or talk on your phone. This will keep your mind off things like that. Also, try walking your dog if you have one, good company, and protective over you

learn karate or park your car REALLY close to your house so you can leave quickly
