Exact quote+origin? “Do not fear failure but rather fear succeeding at something that does not really matter.”?

by FearLessDoMore on February 7, 2010

I don’t know what the exact quote is, but it’s something like that, or these:

"I don’t fear trying something and failing. I fear being successful at something that doesn’t matter."
"I do not fear failure but rather I fear succeeding at something that does not really matter."

I’d like to know who first said it, and in what context. Some people have said it was Martin Luther, but I can’t verify that. Other internet sources I’ve found attribute it to "Dan Erickson", but perhaps he was just repeating it.

This quote, although a little bit off from the original, comes from Phillippians in the Bible. What it means is that no matter how well we do in other aspects of our lives, if we don’t become at one with Jesus, it all means very little. We can be the most successful and wealthy in the world, but if we aren’t connected to the spirit of God, it is truly meaningless.
