They used his deepest fear (rats) to cause him to betray Julia. The fact that he hadn’t betrayed her up until that point was the single thing that was keeping him sane and protecting him from their attempts to brainwash him, after that his spirit was completely crushed and he could no longer resist. I can’t really think of anything beyond that, which is very obvious. It’s not a scene that leaves a lot of room for interpretation, I think.

When I was in highschool and read this book, I actually read the book and did my own homework. What your teacher is looking for here your opinion and your take on the novel. It is hard to start but it’s a great novel, one that everyone should read. And considering when the book was written, the concepts that were used in the book are phenomenal. Even reading it in 1996 was surreal, 12 years after 1984. If you don’t want to buy it and your school hasn’t invested in the copies for the students, contact your local library. They have a store of these books available for students.

Also, if you get a chance, read S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. THAT’S an AMAZING novel. It’s full of gang wars and murder and fire fighting and family.
