"The money power preys upon the nation in time of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me, and causes me to tremble for the safety of our country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed. "

Ok, let’s say you got two fifth grade classes in gym class (or PE, whatever you want to call it) and their running races of six fifth graders a race from one end of the gym to the other. Johnny is the fastest of everyone in the class, he can easily beat anyone so everyone expects him to win his race. He easily out strips everyone with only Tiffany (the second fastest there) being close to him but still unable to catch him and is nearly to the far endand breaks into a jog, waving to those on the side line and shouting about how easily he’s gonna win. This gives Tiffany the chance to both catch him and pass him just a few feet from the line to win.

The teacher at the finish line can explain to the teacher at the starting line that Tiffany won because Johnny got cocky about winning. It’s already explained, no need to explain it even further by saying exactly how Johnny lost.

That would seem to be the meaning of the quote. Lincoln doesn’t want folks to take and go into minute detail on things that are already explained and understood.
