Is the fear of going to hell the only reason for not doing “bad things”?

by FearLessDoMore on January 9, 2010

I am not religious, but it appears that for some people - this is true. Take for instance this case: (and I quote) "Atheists don’t even believe in hell, so what’s to stop them from molesting children or murdering old ladies? They should be put in concentration camps, as far as I’m concerned..". I found this quotation quite shocking actually.. What are your thoughts/feelings?

Doing bad things used to be my nature.
One day something happened to me, and my nature was changed. That very day I stopped lying (and I was a constant liar), and I stopped stealing (and I used to steal from my own parents), and I stopped my foul language and taking the Name of the Lord in vain; and I began to believe in God, and His goodness towards me, when the message of the Gospel transformed my heart, and I believed for the first time Jesus, God come down from heaven, suffered the punishment for my sins on the cross, and was raised from the dead, and I was completely forgiven for His Name’s sake.
I became "born again" that day, like Jesus taught about in John’s Gospel, Chapter 3; and my heart was filled with love and peace and joy and gratitude; and I started living for GOd that very day, and have not stopped now almost forty years later.
All men are sinners and capable of abominable evil. Many would murder someone tomorrow if they knew they could get away with it. Only the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ is able to convert the heart.

Definitely not. Personally I don’t do bad things because they are bad. Not because I’m afraid of hell. If something’s not right, it’s not right. I’ve met some atheists who are more moral and upstanding than many Christians.

This reminds me of one of Albert Einstein’s quotes.

"A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."
~Albert Einstein

Christians seem to claim that without religion people wouldn’t know what is right and what is wrong.

Do you guys really think we need a God to help us realizing killing someone is bad? Do you think we wouldn’t have figured that out on our own?

Also, doesn’t that kinda make you guys hypocrites, causing all the wars? (WW2, The Crusades, etc.).

Most wars started with religion. Don’t even try thinking otherwise.

Actually you can’t get to heaven through works so if fear of hell was your only motivation you’re screwed. For a lot of people that is their only motivation. Trying to do good things to get to heaven will lead to a self-righteous life or complete despair and depression. The motivation for avoiding sin should be that (even though your still tempted, you’ll still slip up) your Deepest Desire has changed. My son doesn’t listen to me out of fear of my punishment, he fallows me because he genuinely loves me and he’s learned that I love him and there is reason behind my rules even if he doesn’t always get why. As a result we usually get closer because it’s easier to bond with someone who’s not fighting me.

Christianity is based on humility. Christians believe that everyone is human and everyone sins, so Christians can’t assume they’re better than Atheists or they wouldn’t need a savior in the first place.

The person you’re quoting is very mistaken

If you are a true christian then its not realy about going to hell or heaven. After buidling a relationship with god all you want to do is to please him. You start to realize that once you follow the commands in the bible, your life will become much greater. Life is easyer, nothing bad happend, god rewards your prayers, you feel his presence, miricles happn ex.

Of course not.
