This quote is an example of a metaphor. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which two things are compared without the words "like" or "as." The comparison is actually two of them One is that "he" is like Christ on the cross nailed and killed at the same time with two other individuals, condemned thieves. The second metaphor is that the thieves are compared to the state of mind as expressed in the two phrases, "regret for the past" and "fear of the future." If these are thieves, then they steal his sense of stability and well being.
